Matthew H. Birkhold
Bio
Matthew H. Birkhold is a professor of Germanic Literature and law at The Ohio State University. He is also the founding director of the Umwelt Center for Environmental Humanities. He holds a BA and JD from Columbia University and PhD from Princeton University. Prior to joining Ohio State, he worked as an attorney-adviser for the U.S. Department of State. Matthew’s most recent book, Chasing Icebergs, was published in 2023. His writing has appeared in outlets including The New York Times, the Atlantic, Foreign Affairs, and Indian Country Today.
